The walnut valley Sailing Club/Safety, Training and Educational Program offers a sail-training program in a non-competitive environment utilizing instructional techniques that are taught by certified USSA instructors. The instructor/student ratio is one instructor per five students.
The classes are taught at the WVSC facilities using a fleet of 22 boats ranging in size from 8’ to 23’.
The student’s fee includes a membership to WVSC with the use of certain program boats when they are not being used in training.
The programs are structured to give a maximum amount of on the water instruction accompanied by a minimum of classroom lectures.
The goal is to have fun on the water while learning how to sail.
Two sessions are offered each summer, one in June and one in July. There are three levels of instruction offered:
This course is designed for 8 to 17 year olds with out sailing experience. The objective is to teach, in an accelerated fashion, some of the basic concepts in sailing. Those concepts include safety, the sailing environment, the sailboat rigging, knots, sails, wind and sailing fundamentals. All materials and boats are provided.
Intermediate sailing picks up where the basic class left off. Topics include sail trim, boat handling, basic compass, and rules of the road; capsize recovery, rigging, launching, games and much more. Cooperation and team building, not competition is stressed. All materials and boats are provided.
YOUTH ADVANCED SAILING
This course moves the student into the boat handling techniques needed to race. The student learns to sail the boat in the most efficient manner possible, to concentrate on the speed of the boat using all the techniques learned in the beginning and intermediate courses. The high performance boats as well as keelboats may be used. All materials and boats are provided.
The adult courses follow the same format and curriculum as the youth programs only they are taught on an adult level. The adult classes also differ from the youth classes in that they can begin in either the centerboard boats or the keelboats from beginning through the advanced courses. All materials and boats are provided.
The boats that can be used for free time sailing are Prams, Optimist, Sabot and the Catalina 14.2. There are no keelboats available for free time sailing therefore an adult taking only the keelboat class would have to take an orientation session to be able to use the Catalina 14.2 boats.
Whether you are a beginner wanting to learn to sail or you are wanting to increase your sailing abilities, we invite you to “Come Sail With Us.”
